Medication Management

Dr. Velarde practices evidence-based medicine combined with an individualized approach to thoughtfully prescribe medication for a wide range of psychiatric symptoms. Starting medication can be stressful and anxiety provoking for many. Dr. Velarde understands this and aims to closely collaborate with patients/parents to create a treatment plan that aligns with their values and goals.

Psychotherapy

Dr. Velarde works collaboratively with therapists when patients are already connected with one. If not, she can integrate psychotherapy into treatment when applicable. She tailors her methods to meet the unique needs of each person. She primarily utilizes psychodynamic principles for older adolescents and adults, helping them explore how past experiences influence their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Dr. Velarde also uses a variety of other therapeutic approaches including supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapies (TF-CBT) and play therapy.

A Balanced Approach

Dr. Velarde offers a holistic approach that can integrate exercise & movement, nutrition, spirituality, community and connection with nature into treatment plans, ensuring a well-rounded path to mental well-being.

Initial Evaluation

The comprehensive initial evaluation is an opportunity for Dr. Velarde to gather important information, including a psychiatric, medical, developmental, and social history. If Dr. Velarde’s practice feels like a good fit to both parties, a treatment plan will be created to meet each patient’s needs.

Child/Adolescent Patients

TWO 60-90 minute initial evaluation appointments, which includes time meeting with parents/guardians.

Adult Patients

ONE 60-90 minute initial evaluation appointment.

Dr. Velarde will involve any additional supports (such as spouses, parents, etc.) in treatment based on patient’s preference.

Follow-Up Appointments

At the start of treatment, follow-up appointments are scheduled every 1-4 weeks based on the patient’s symptoms and treatment plan. Follow-up appointments range from 25-50 minutes. Appointments are spaced out gradually as symptoms stabilize.
